BIOGRAPHY
1966 - Born in Wilmington, North Carolina
ca1971 - I run
into a magnolia branch in our front yard, stabbing my left eye, which
will eventually develop a severe astigmatism. I will never see
the world the same way again.
1984 - the Virginia
Military Institute. I'm glad I went. I learned a lot. I'm equally
glad I got kicked out so I would have to find out what I really
wanted to do.
ca1986 - One
day, a voice in my head tells me to start teaching myself how
to paint and it clicks. I start attending the University of NC
at Wilmington to get back on my feet.
1988-1997 - I discover found metal sculpture at UNC-Asheville.
I have two very successful student shows, graduate with a BFA
and continue to live in that hypnotically beautiful area for several
years. By now, I totally identify as a sculptor.
1997-present
- I move to Philadelphia. Unable to set up a metal shop, I quickly
discover a rich vocabulary of media in dumpster diving.
1999-2000 Thanks
to the great support of local gallerist and artist Shelley Spector,
I not only show in her gallery but have my first major exposure
as an emerging artist at the main galleries of the Painted Bride
Arts Center here in Philadelphia.
2001-2007 - I
start traveling the country, checking out the art scene and making
art in LA, Chicago and New York. In the last three years, my found
object works move into a very interesting and final phase, during
which all my pieces become self supporting installations. It is
a period during which I learn a great deal, but show very little.
2008 - A lean
year of frustration, boredom and hibernation.
2009 - A sea
change comes when I realize that I want to take more control of
my materials and ideas, leaving found object work behind. The
one aspect of my old work that I carry over is the intrinsic construction
methodology of the last three years.
2010 - This year
I begin incorporating specifically chosen objects into some of
my pieces. I also start creating a series of more two dimensional
works on wood panels. The energy around this new work intensifies
exponentially. I attract new benefactors and huge new opportunities
present themselves. I am off and running at last.
